What kind of herbs should I take if I am having insomnia?

I notice that I have insomnia which is something that I have never dealt with before and it is making it hard for me to go to sleep. I have heard that Sleeping pills are bad because they make the body dependent on them later on but I feel like I have a hard time going to sleep.

benadryl (diphenhydramine) is a great drug to help you sleep. It is sold over the counter (OTC) in most pharmacies. The best part is that it is non-habit forming, so your body will not get dependent on it.

Another drug to try is melatonin. Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone in the body. Taking it medicinally can help with insomnia. Do not take melatonin if you have high blood pressure (can raise BP), diabetes (can raise blood sugar), depression (can make symptoms worse), or a seizure disorder (can potentiate seizures)

One more option could be Valerian root extract. This has been shown to help treat insomnia. Do not drink alcohol with this drug, or other CNS depressants because they could increase each others effect in the body

Talk to your doctor about this problem and explain that you don’t want to take pills. He should suggest you different things you can do as the type of exercise you can do before you go to sleep or which tea is best for insomnia.
You can try a glass of warm milk every time before you go to bed. If you do it always it will in time make a sort of habit for your organism and you will fill sleepy every time you drink milk before bed.

Insomnia is a lack of healthful, restful sleep and is a common problem.
Herbs can be quite helpful, not only in helping to get some sleep, but in nourishing the nervous system as well. Here are some herbs and herbal remedies which are very helpful for insomnia:

Chamomile (tea or tincture) has mild sedative properties.
Hops Tincture or Tea is used to promote sleep and ease indigestion.
St. John’s Wort prolongs deep sleep cycle.
Skullcap and Lemon Balm Tincture promotes sleep.
Valerian tincture is widely used to treat nervousness, restlessness, and sleeping disorders.
"Anti Stress Calming Tincture" contains Damiana, Wild lettuce, Skullcap, and Lemon Balm and has calming relaxing and pain relieving effects.
"Sleep Well Formula" contains Valerian, Hops and Skullcap and helps with insomnia and anxiety

Treating insomnia is also possible with the use of aromatherapy. The human brain is an extraordinary thing, and it is not uncommon for us to strongly link memories with our senses, including smells. Some essential oils are purported to be helpful with insomnia. Lavender is often touted as having soporific (sleep-inducing) qualities. Other possibilities include: bergamot, sweet marjoram, roman chamomile, sandalwood, clary sage, and jasmine. Each is variously described as calming, soothing, relaxing, and warming. I personally use "Insomnia Relief Essential Oil Blend" when I have sleeping problems. I place a few drops of the oil blend on my pillow and this is just the thing for me to put me in a sleeping mood and make me sleeping like a baby.
